Hoosier National Forest
National Forest · Bedford, Indiana
Roughly 204,000 acres of hardwood forest across nine counties of south-central Indiana, in scattered parcels rather than one block, on the unglaciated hill country that the ice sheets stopped short of. It holds the Charles C. Deam Wilderness — the only designated wilderness in Indiana — the Hemlock Cliffs sandstone box canyon, and the Pioneer Mothers Memorial Forest, a rare stand of never-logged old-growth hardwood. The forest is managed for timber, water and recreation together, so a visitor moves between genuinely wild ground and active working forest within a few miles.
