Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site

National Historic Site · Elverson, Pennsylvania

A charcoal-fired iron plantation in the hills of Berks County that operated from 1771 to 1883, and one of the most complete surviving examples of the self-contained industrial communities that made American iron before coal and steel. The furnace stack, the waterwheel, the blast machinery, the ironmaster's house, the tenant houses, the office store and the barn all stand on their original sites, surrounded by the woodland that was cut and burned to feed it. It sits inside French Creek State Park, and admission is free.
