Hornbaek

Old Fishing Village Turned North Zealand Seaside Resort, With A Wide Sandy Kattegat Beach, A Small Harbour And The Hornbaek Plantage Forest · Hornbaek, Capital Region of Denmark

Hornbaek is a small seaside town on the north coast of Zealand, facing the Kattegat roughly 12 km west of Helsingor and about an hour north of Copenhagen. It began as a fishing village, and in the late 1800s painters and city families discovered it; the painter P.S. Kroyer is said to have worked here as a young man. Today it is one of the best-loved summer resorts of the so-called Danish Riviera: a wide, pale sandy beach running both ways from a small working harbour, low dunes, streets of old fishermen's cottages and summer houses, and the Hornbaek Plantage, a coastal pine and beech forest stretching east towards Hellebaek. People come to swim, walk the shore, eat fish by the harbour and slow down. It suits families, couples and anyone touring Kronborg, Gilleleje or the north Zealand castles. The honest caveat: it is a small town, not a destination for a whole holiday, the sea is cool even in July, and on a sunny summer weekend the beach, roads and car parks fill with day-trippers from Copenhagen.

Hornbaek harbour and beach, on the north Zealand coast between Helsingor and Gilleleje, Hornbaek, Capital Region of Denmark, Denmark

Open all year: the beach, harbour and Hornbaek Plantage are public and free at all hours. The summer season is roughly mid June to mid August, when cafes, ice cream kiosks and the seasonal lifeguard service run (confirm the lifeguard dates and hours each year); off season many seasonal places close or keep weekend-only hours. By train from Copenhagen, take the regional or Oresund train to Helsingor (roughly 45-55 minutes), then the small local Hornbaek line towards Gilleleje (roughly 20-25 minutes). By car it is roughly 50-60 minutes from central Copenhagen. Nothing needs booking except summer accommodation, which should be booked months ahead.
