Horsens Prison Museum
State Prison In Use From 1853 To 2006, Now A Museum Of Cells, Escape Stories And Prison Life, With A Hostel And Concert Venue Inside The Walls · Horsens, Central Denmark Region
Horsens Prison Museum, known in Danish simply as Faengslet, meaning The Prison, occupies Horsens State Prison in East Jutland, one of Denmark's largest and most notorious prisons, which held inmates from 1853 until it closed in 2006. Built as a model penitentiary of its age, with a central watch position and long cell wings behind high walls, it housed thieves, murderers and political prisoners for more than 150 years. Today the whole complex is a museum where visitors walk the cell corridors, step into cells left as the last prisoners had them, see the exercise yards and isolation cells, and hear stories of guards, inmates, daily routine, punishment and escape attempts through audio, film and objects. Part of the site is a hostel, where guests can sleep in converted cells, and the prison yards host big concerts and events. People come because it feels real, raw and recent. The honest caveat: the themes are dark and sometimes graphic, it is not designed for very young children, and Horsens itself is a quiet town rather than a destination on its own.

From Copenhagen, direct intercity trains reach Horsens in roughly 2.5-3 hours; from Aarhus it is roughly 20-30 minutes by train. The prison is roughly 2 km north-west of Horsens station: about 25 minutes on foot, a short local bus ride or a taxi. By car it is a few minutes from the E45 motorway.
