Hôtel de Glace

Privately Operated Seasonal Hotel · Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier, Quebec

Hotel de Glace is an ice hotel built each winter at Duchesnay, about 25 minutes by car from Quebec City, in the Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier area. It is made from snow and ice, rebuilt from scratch every year and left to melt in spring, so it exists only for a few months, roughly January to March (confirm dates). Artists design a new theme each season, with vaulted halls, ice sculptures, an ice bar, a chapel and themed suites. Overnight guests sleep on ice beds under thermal sleeping bags in rooms at around freezing or just below, then warm up in hot tubs, a sauna and a heated room. Day visitors can tour without staying. It suits couples, bucket-list travellers and curious families, but it is not for everyone: it is cold, there is little privacy and the rooms are among the most expensive in the region. Book months ahead, dress warmly for the tour and confirm every detail with the operator.

The hotel is open only in winter, commonly from early January to late March, with dates that depend on cold weather and construction. Day visits run during daytime and into the evening, and overnight guests normally check in in the afternoon and attend a briefing before bed. Confirm opening dates, day-visit times, last entry and any closures with the operator before you plan. It is closed in spring, summer and autumn, because the building melts. Warm spells can shorten the season or close rooms. Evenings, when the halls are lit, are busier and more atmospheric than midday, so confirm whether evening day visits are offered.
