A Quiet And Moving Stop Near Ephesus, With A Short Walk Through Pine Trees · Selcuk, Izmir
The House of the Virgin Mary, known in Turkish as Meryem Ana Evi, is a small stone chapel on the wooded slope of Nightingale Mountain (Bulbul Dagi), about 7 km from Selcuk and Ephesus in Izmir province. Christian tradition holds that the Virgin Mary spent her last years in this area, brought here by Saint John after the crucifixion, and the building on the site is a rebuilt 6th or 7th century structure on older foundations (confirm). It was identified in the 19th century after the visions of a nun, and later popes have visited, while Muslims also honour Meryem as the mother of the prophet Isa. A shaded path leads to the house, a small chapel, a spring with taps said to be sacred, and a wall where visitors tie paper wishes. The mood is quiet and respectful, and most visitors stay for under an hour. The setting is a protected pine grove, and the visit works best as a short calm pause between the larger ruins of Ephesus and the town of Selcuk. Confirm hours and transport before a visit.
