House on the Rock
Specialty Museum · Spring Green, Wisconsin
A house Alex Jordan Jr. began building on a chimney of rock near Spring Green in the 1940s, opened to the public in 1959, and then kept extending for thirty years into a warren of rooms, streets and cavernous halls stuffed with collections he largely commissioned rather than acquired. It is not a museum and most of what it displays is not authentic, which is the point people miss and then argue about. Neil Gaiman set a long sequence of American Gods here in 2001 and the television adaptation filmed it, which is why a rural Wisconsin oddity has an international following.
