Howe Caverns

Show Cave · Howes Cave, New York

A limestone cave system 156 feet below the Schoharie Valley, found in 1842 by a farmer named Lester Howe who noticed his cows sheltering by a hole that breathed cold air. It has been shown commercially since 1929, and the tour includes a QUARTER-MILE BOAT RIDE on an underground lake — the Lake of Venus — which is the thing everyone remembers and which very few American show caves offer.
