Huangguoshu Waterfall
National 5A Tourist Attraction; One Of The Largest Waterfalls In China · Anshun, Guizhou
The thunderous centrepiece of a cluster of waterfalls in the karst hills of western Guizhou, and one of the largest waterfalls in Asia: the Baishui River plunges roughly 78 metres over a limestone cliff about 100 metres wide into the churning Rhinoceros Pool, throwing up clouds of spray and rainbows. A tunnel-like path lets visitors walk through the Water Curtain Cave behind the falling water, peering out through gaps in the torrent. The scenic area, named after the yellow-fruit trees that once grew here, includes Doupotang, a broad, low curtain of water famous from the opening of the classic Journey to the West television series, and Tianxingqiao, a fairy-tale landscape of stone forests, bonsai-like trees, caves and stepping stones carved with the days of the year. Villages of the Buyi people, who build houses from stone slabs and are famed for batik, surround the falls. Summer rains swell the falls to their most dramatic, and high-speed trains from Guiyang reach nearby Anshun West in under 40 minutes.
