Huasteca Potosina
RegióN TuríStica / Huasteca · Ciudad Valles, San Luis Potosí
The Huasteca Potosina is the green, tropical eastern end of San Luis Potosi state, where the dry plateau drops through the Sierra Madre Oriental into a land of rivers, jungle and turquoise waterfalls. Ciudad Valles is the practical base, and the attractions are spread over roads of 30 to 130 km. The headline is Tamul, a 105 m wide and roughly 105 m high curtain of water on the Gallinas River, reached by paddle or motor boat from Tanchachin. Add the pools of Puente de Dios and Tamasopo, the Micos cascades, the Minas Viejas fall, the Sotano de las Golondrinas pit where swifts spiral at dawn, and Las Pozas in nearby Xilitla. This is Teenek and Nahua country, and Spanish, Nahuatl and Teenek are all heard. Water is turquoise from November to May and muddy brown in the rainy season, so timing decides whether the trip is spectacular or a letdown. Roads are winding, and distances take longer than the map suggests, so do not try to see everything in two days.
