Hudson's Hope

A Small Riverside Village In The Peace Valley With The Huge W.A.C. Bennett Dam And Its Visitor Centre, A Museum Of Dinosaur And Local Pioneer History, The Peace Canyon And A Quiet Northern Feel. A Scenic Stop For Those Interested In The Hydro And Fur Trade History · Hudson's Hope, British Columbia

Hudsons Hope is a village of about 900 people on the Peace River in north-east British Columbia, roughly 70 km west of Fort St. John on Highway 29. The Dunne-za, Cree and Sekani peoples have used this stretch of the river for thousands of years, and fur traders built a post here in the early 1800s (confirm the date and the first site). The village is best known for the W.A.C. Bennett Dam, one of the largest earth-fill dams in the world, which holds back Williston Lake, the biggest reservoir in British Columbia. A visitor centre explains the dam and the power plant, while a museum in town shows pioneer and fur-trade items, and dinosaur tracks have been found nearby. The Peace Canyon dam sits a few kilometres downstream. The village keeps a quiet, rugged feel, with the river canyon, spruce forest and mountain views close at hand, and it makes a rewarding detour from the Alaska Highway at Fort St. John.
