Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve
A Large Private Nature Reserve Of Temperate Rainforest, Waterfalls And Volcano Slopes Near Lago Pirihueico, Known For Its Fantasy Architecture Lodges · Neltume, Los Rios
Huilo Huilo is a large private reserve in the Andes of Los Rios, protecting temperate Valdivian rainforest, rivers and waterfalls on the slopes of the Mocho-Choshuenco volcano. It was created from former logging land and is managed for conservation, including a breeding programme for the huemul deer, and it has become famous for its whimsical lodges: the Montana Magica, a mossy cone-shaped hotel with a waterfall pouring from its summit, and treehouse-style buildings linked by walkways through the forest. The Salto del Huilo Huilo, a powerful waterfall plunging into a gorge, is the natural highlight, alongside the Salto de la Leona and trails through ferns, bamboo and giant coihue trees. From Puerto Fuy, the ferry crosses Lago Pirihueico towards the border with Argentina. The reserve offers canopy tours, hot tubs, kayaking and winter snowshoeing on the volcano. It is a family favourite in Chile and increasingly popular with foreign visitors drawn by photographs of the lodges. It is wet: this is rainforest, and rain falls in every season.
