Hukou Waterfall

Yellow River Scenic Area Shared By Shanxi (Jixian) And Shaanxi (Yichuan) · Linfen, Shanxi

The thundering golden waterfall of the Yellow River, where China's mother river, carrying its heavy load of loess silt, is squeezed from a channel hundreds of metres wide into a narrow rock trough and plunges into a boiling, mist-filled gorge. Its name means the Mouth of the Teapot. Lying on the border between Shanxi and Shaanxi provinces deep in the Loess Plateau, it is the largest waterfall on the Yellow River, and its roar and clouds of ochre spray have become a national symbol - it appeared on the old 50-yuan banknote and inspired the patriotic Yellow River Cantata. Visitors walk down onto the wide rock shelves beside the falls, where rainbows form in the spray on sunny days. In winter, parts of the falls freeze into huge ice curtains and icicles, drawing photographers. The waterfall can be seen from both banks: the Shanxi side in Jixian County and the Shaanxi side in Yichuan County, linked by a bridge, and since 2026 one ticket covers both.
