Hulunbuir Grasslands
Among The Largest And Best Preserved Grasslands In China · Hailar, Inner Mongolia
One of the largest and best-preserved grasslands in China, a rolling green sea of steppe in the far northeast of Inner Mongolia, bordered by the forests of the Greater Khingan range and the frontiers of Russia and Mongolia. In summer the land turns vividly green and bursts with wildflowers, rivers loop in endless meanders across the plain, and herds of horses, sheep and cattle graze around the white yurts of Mongolian, Ewenki and Daur herders. The Mergel River, which winds so tortuously that it is famous across China, is the classic image, while around Ergun the huge Genhe wetland spreads along the Russian border, and villages of the Russian ethnic minority keep log houses, bread ovens and Orthodox traditions. Farther west, the border city of Manzhouli mixes Chinese and Russian life, and Hulun Lake stretches toward Mongolia. Visitors ride horses, stay in yurt camps, attend summer Naadam festivals of wrestling, archery and horse racing, and drive long loops through open country. By September the birches turn gold, and winter brings deep snow and temperatures of -30 C and below.
