Humboldt Redwoods State Park
State Park · Weott, California
Humboldt Redwoods State Park lies in southern Humboldt County along the Eel River, a short drive off US 101, and is among the largest redwood state parks in California, tens of thousands of acres of old-growth and second-growth forest. The Avenue of the Giants, a scenic drive of about 30 miles that runs parallel to the highway, passes through it, with groves of enormous trees close to the road. Founders Grove and the Rockefeller Forest, among the largest remaining areas of old-growth redwoods, are the best-known stops, and the park has a visitor center, camping, trails, river access and quiet back roads. It suits drivers, hikers, photographers, cyclists and campers; the forest is cool, damp and often foggy, and the roads are narrow. Day-use and camping fees may apply, the Eel River floods in winter, and services are sparse, so fill your tank first. Confirm fees, road conditions, closures and visitor center hours before you go.
17119 Avenue of the Giants, Weott, California, 95571, United States
The park is generally open to day visitors from dawn until dusk, and the Avenue of the Giants is a public road that stays open around the clock unless flooding, a downed tree or a landslide closes a stretch. The visitor center keeps shorter daytime hours, usually closing in the late afternoon and with reduced days in the off-season - confirm the current schedule. Campgrounds take reservations in the busy season and may have check-in times. Winter storms and high water on the Eel River can close roads, trails and campgrounds for days at a time, so check conditions before you set out.
