Huntington State Beach
State Park · Huntington Beach, California
Huntington State Beach is a wide, flat strip of sand in Orange County between the city of Huntington Beach, which calls itself Surf City USA, and Newport Beach. It is a State Parks beach with a paid parking lot, lifeguards in season, rows of fire rings that people use for evening bonfires - confirm the rules - and a bike path along the sand. The surf is steady, which suits learners and regular surfers, while the Huntington Beach Pier and its busy downtown are a separate city landmark nearby. The beach is calmer than the pier area but still crowded on summer weekends, so arrive early. In May and June the coast is often gloomy with May Gray and June Gloom fog, and the water is cold most of the year. Rip currents and stingrays are common. Confirm parking fees, fire ring rules and lifeguard coverage before you go, and expect a long day if you stay for a fire. Bring warm layers for the evening.

State Parks has generally opened the beach from early morning, around sunrise, until late evening, and the fire rings usually close with the park, commonly around ten at night - confirm the posted hours and the season. The parking lot is staffed or pay-by-machine, with the day-use fee collected at the gate or kiosk, and gates may be locked after closing, so do not leave a car inside overnight. Lifeguards are normally on duty in the summer months and part of the year, with tower coverage reduced in winter. Fire restrictions, high surf or beach closures after a sewage spill or storm can change the day without notice. The Huntington Beach Pier and city shops keep different hours from the state beach.
