Huntley Meadows Park

Nature Preserve · Alexandria, Virginia

Fifteen hundred acres of freshwater wetland inside the Alexandria suburbs, and the best place to watch birds in Northern Virginia. A half-mile boardwalk runs out across the central marsh to an observation tower, and beavers built most of what you are standing over — a 2013 restoration added a water-control structure to stop the wetland silting up and drying out.

3701 Lockheed Boulevard, Alexandria, Virginia, 22306, United States

Park open daily, dawn to dusk; the gates are locked at dusk. Visitor centre generally open most days on shorter hours, closed some weekdays — check Fairfax County Park Authority. Free.
