ʻĪao Valley State Monument

National Natural Landmark · Wailuku, Hawaii

A lush stream-cut valley in the West Maui mountains about three miles west of Wailuku, designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972. Its landmark is the ʻĪao Needle, a green-covered lava remnant rising sharply from the valley floor. A short paved path climbs to a viewpoint over it. The valley is also the site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai, one of the bloodiest in Hawaiian history, and it is treated as a place of consequence rather than only as scenery.
