Igneada Floodplain Forests
A Rare European Floodplain Forest Of Ash And Oak Standing In Water, With Freshwater Lakes, Sand Dunes, A Long Wild Beach, Bird Migration And Wildlife Such As Deer And Wild Boar. A Quiet Nature Spot In Thrace, With A Small Fishing Village And Simple Guesthouses · Igneada, Kirklareli
Igneada is a fishing and beach village on the Black Sea coast of Thrace, about 90 km north-east of Kirklareli and roughly 180 km north-west of Istanbul, a few kilometres from the Bulgarian border. Around it spreads the Igneada Floodplain Forests, a protected landscape of freshwater lakes, reed beds, dunes and one of the rarest forest types in Europe: longoz, a swamp forest of ash, alder, oak and hornbeam whose trees stand in water for months of the year. The area includes Mert Lake, Saka Lake, Erikli Lake and a long wild beach, and it lies on a migration route, so birds, deer, wild boar and otters share the woods. Boardwalks and forest roads thread among the trees, while the village offers simple guesthouses, fish restaurants and a small harbour. The coast is quiet, undeveloped and best from spring to autumn. Igneada suits nature lovers who like slow, wet, green landscapes and empty sand beaches.
