Ilhéus
Cocoa Coast Port City In Southern Bahia Founded 1534, The Setting Of Jorge Amado'S Novels And The Airport For Itacaré · Ilhéus, Bahia
Ilhéus is a port city in southern Bahia founded in 1534, which grew rich in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the capital of Brazil's cocoa coast. The novelist Jorge Amado grew up here and set several of his best-known books in the town, above all Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon, and the old centre still carries their landmarks: the Bar Vesúvio beside the cathedral, the Bataclan cabaret, and the house where his family lived, now the Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado. Around them stand the mansions and palaces of the cocoa barons and a large cathedral facing the sea. The cocoa boom collapsed after the witch's broom disease hit the plantations from the late 1980s (confirm the date), and much of the town has a faded, working-port feel. Today most visitors fly into Ilhéus and drive straight to Itacaré. Those who stay a day or two find cocoa farm tours, fine chocolate and beaches south toward Olivença, a good stop if you like Amado or chocolate.
Centro Histórico, Ilhéus, BA, Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil
The historic centre is a working city district, busy on weekdays with offices and shops and quieter on Sunday, when many businesses are closed. The Casa de Cultura Jorge Amado and other museums usually open in the daytime from Tuesday or so to Saturday, with shorter hours or closures on Sunday and Monday; confirm current days and hours before you go, as they change. The cathedral opens for services and at set times for visitors. Bar Vesúvio and the Bataclan work as a restaurant and cultural space with their own hours, often busier in the evening; check what is open on the day. Cocoa farm tours run by appointment and often need to be booked at least a day ahead, especially in low season when some farms do not open daily. Beaches are always open, but beach barracas along the road south operate mostly in daylight and some close on weekdays outside holidays. The busiest times are the Brazilian summer from December to Carnival, the July holidays, and during the annual chocolate festival, when hotels fill; check dates if you want to go or avoid them. Rain can fall in any month.
