Illinois Great River Road

Scenic Highway · Grafton, Illinois

Five hundred and fifty miles of byway following the Mississippi down the entire western edge of Illinois, from Galena in the far north-west to Cairo at the state's southern tip. It is part of a ten-state route first mapped in 1938, and the Illinois section carries the best of it — a stretch below Alton where limestone bluffs stand directly over the road and the river, which is as close to a mountain road as this state gets.
