Illinois River Float Trips

Oklahoma Scenic River Regulated By GRDA Scenic Rivers Operations Since 2016; Commercial Float Outfitters On Highway 10 · Tahlequah, Oklahoma

The float trip is eastern Oklahoma's summer institution: a day in a canoe, raft or kayak on the Illinois River, a clear, gravel-bottomed Ozark stream that runs south out of Arkansas through the Cherokee Nation to Lake Tenkiller. Outfitters along State Highway 10 north of Tahlequah hire boats and run shuttle buses, putting floaters in for trips of two hours to a full day through riffles, gravel bars and long green pools under sycamore and oak bluffs. Most of the river is Class I with a few Class II riffles at good water, which makes it a beginner's river, though it is also a party river on July weekends. GRDA Scenic Rivers Operations regulates it, not the old Scenic Rivers Commission, which was abolished in 2016: every vessel needs a float permit, $1 for a day or $10 for a year, and glass, Styrofoam, spirits and tied-together boats are all banned. High water suspends floating outright, and low water in late summer can stop rentals.

Outfitters run seasonally, mostly spring to early autumn, with daylight float hours and last put-in times set by trip length. A float permit is required year-round, floating is suspended in high water and rentals can stop in low water (check grda.com/illinois-river or call 918-456-3251).
