Illinois State Museum
Natural History · Springfield, Illinois
The state's own museum of Illinois — its geology, its ecology, its archaeology, its people and its art — founded in 1877 and housed since 1963 in a building across from the Capitol in Springfield. It is the institution that holds the material record of the state, from mastodon bones out of the glacial till to Mississippian pottery and twentieth-century decorative arts, and it is free.
