Indiana World War Memorial Plaza

Modern Monument · Indianapolis, Indiana

A five-block axis of monuments, lawns and civic buildings running north through downtown Indianapolis, begun in 1921 as a memorial to the dead of the First World War and to house the national headquarters of the American Legion. The centrepiece is a limestone Memorial building modelled on the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, holding the Shrine Room under a Star of Destiny. Indianapolis is regularly described as having more monuments and memorials dedicated to veterans than any American city other than Washington DC, and this plaza with the nearby Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is why.

55 East Michigan Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46204, United States

The plaza and grounds are open at all times and floodlit after dark. The Memorial building, Shrine Room and military museum keep daytime hours and are closed on some Mondays and holidays. All free. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument observation deck keeps separate hours and its lift is frequently out of service.
