Ingonish Beach
A Fresh Water And Ocean Beach In The National Park, Where A Freshwater Pond Is Separated From The Atlantic By A Sandbar, With Supervised Swimming, A Picnic Area, An Interpretation Area And Views Of Cape Smokey And The Ingonish Headlands. A Summer Beach Stop On The Cabot Trail · Ingonish Beach, Nova Scotia
Ingonish Beach is a long sandy shore inside Cape Breton Highlands National Park, on the east side of the Cabot Trail close to Ingonish village. A freshwater lake lies just behind the sand, separated from the Atlantic by a narrow bar, so one parking area gives a choice between the calmer lake and the open ocean. The beach sits below the long ridge of Cape Smokey to the south and the headland of Middle Head to the north, with the green Highlands rising behind. Parks Canada keeps a supervised swimming area in summer, a picnic area with tables and an interpretation display, and the Ingonish visitor centre is close by. Walkers use the sand at low tide, birders watch eagles and sea ducks, and the Highlands Links golf course and Keltic Lodge are a short drive away. Summer brings families and cyclists on the Cabot Trail, while autumn brings colour and empty sand. Services thin out quickly outside summer, so plan food and fuel before you arrive.

The beach itself has no gate and can be walked at any hour, but the supervised swimming season is short, roughly early July to late August, with guards on duty about mid-morning to late afternoon - confirm dates and hours with the park. Washrooms, the picnic area and the Ingonish visitor centre follow a summer pattern, roughly late May or June to mid-October, with the centre usually open about 9 to 5 and longer in peak weeks. Park passes apply to the national park and are checked at the Cabot Trail entrances and at some lots. Outside summer the sand stays open but unsupervised, and most services in the village shut by late October.
