Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures

Archaeology Museum · Chicago, Illinois

The University of Chicago's museum of the ancient Near East, founded in 1919 as the Oriental Institute with Rockefeller money and renamed in 2023 to describe what it actually studies. Its own excavations across Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Turkey and the Levant filled it, which is why it holds objects of a scale no purchasing museum could assemble — a forty-ton winged bull from an Assyrian palace, and a seventeen-foot Tutankhamun. Admission is free.

1155 East 58th Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60637, United States

FREE, donation requested. CLOSED MONDAYS. Academic hours, shorter than a downtown museum — check before travelling.
