Interlaken and the Lakes
Interlaken, The Bernese Oberland'S Adventure And Rail Hub Between Lake Thun And Lake Brienz, With The Harder Kulm Viewpoint (1,322 M) By Funicular, Paragliding, Canyoning, Boat Cruises On The Turquoise Lakes And Trains To Grindelwald And Lauterbrunnen. A Base For Most Jungfrau Region Trips. · Interlaken, Bern
Interlaken means between the lakes, and the town sits at about 570 m on a flat strip of land between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz in the Bernese Oberland. It has two stations, Interlaken West and Interlaken Ost, and trains go on from here to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen and the Jungfrau region. The Hoheweg main street leads to the Hohematte meadow, where paragliders land with the Jungfrau in view. Above town, the Harder Kulm funicular climbs to a platform at 1,322 m over both lakes. Steamers cross the turquoise water, and Giessbach Falls and Iseltwald lie on Lake Brienz. The honest picture: the town itself is plain and touristy, a base and transit hub, and the activities - paragliding, canyoning, skydiving - are expensive. Summer brings tour-bus crowds, and fog and rain can hide the views for days, so keep your plans flexible and check the webcams. The setting is lovely, and the lakes, Harder Kulm and Giessbach make two good days at a gentle pace, but budget carefully because hotels, boats and sports add up fast.
