Interlochen Center for the Arts

Amphitheater · Interlochen, Michigan

Interlochen Center for the Arts is a campus in the woods near Traverse City, on a narrow strip of land between Duck Lake and Green Lake. It began in 1928 as the National Music Camp and now includes the Interlochen Arts Camp, a summer programme for young artists, and the Interlochen Arts Academy, a boarding high school. Visitors come in summer for concerts by students and guest artists in Kresge Auditorium and other halls, with a mix of free and ticketed events; confirm the schedule. The wooded grounds are open to visitors with some restrictions, and walking between venues is part of the appeal. It is a school, not a theme park, so quiet areas and rehearsal times matter. Interlochen State Park is next door and is its own place. Traverse City is about 15 miles away, and a visit works best as an evening concert plus a short walk through the grounds. Confirm tickets and campus rules before you visit.

Interlochen is busiest in the summer season, when the Arts Camp runs and the concert calendar fills, roughly from late June through August, with some events at other times of the year during the academic term. Public events have set start times, usually afternoon and evening; box office hours vary, and many performances need tickets or timed entry. The campus is open to visitors with some restrictions, and certain buildings, dormitories and practice areas are closed to the public. Confirm the current concert schedule, visitor rules and ticketing directly with the box office before you travel. Outside summer the campus is quieter and public access may be more limited.
