Interlochen State Park

Michigan State Park · Interlochen, Michigan

Interlochen State Park sits between Duck Lake and Green Lake, about 15 miles southwest of Traverse City in northwest Michigan. It was established in 1917 and is among the oldest state parks in Michigan, set aside to protect a stand of old-growth white pine that still shades much of the grounds. It is a large, popular campground with two beaches, boat launches, picnic areas and short trails, and the Interlochen Center for the Arts is just across the road, so camp evenings sometimes carry music. It suits families, campers and anyone who wants big trees and calm inland lakes without a long drive from town. It is a lake and camp park, not a serious hiking park, and it is short on dramatic scenery: allow a day, or a weekend if camping. Reserve a site early in summer. Mosquitoes can be heavy in early summer, and a Recreation Passport is needed for the vehicle - confirm the current rules before you go.

Michigan state parks are generally open daily year-round from about 8 AM to 10 PM for day use, with a Recreation Passport needed for the vehicle - confirm current hours and fees with the Michigan DNR before you go. The campground is the main draw and is busiest from Memorial Day to Labor Day, with sites reservable ahead online and filling well before summer weekends. Some campground loops and restrooms may close or reduce services in the cold months, and swimming beaches are unguarded. Winter use is quiet, with snow limiting access to parts of the park. Check posted notices at the entrance for the day, the beach and any boat launch.
