International African American Museum

History Museum · Charleston, South Carolina

A museum that opened in June 2023 on Gadsden's Wharf in Charleston, the single largest point of entry for enslaved Africans brought to North America — a very substantial share of all of them came ashore on this ground. The building stands thirteen feet up on pillars so that nobody walks on it. Underneath is a memorial garden, and in the garden a shallow tidal pool where the water rises and falls twice a day over the outlines of bodies laid out to the plan of a slave ship.

14 Wharfside Street, Charleston, South Carolina, 29401, United States

Generally open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 10 AM to 5 PM, and CLOSED MONDAYS — verify before travelling. TIMED-ENTRY TICKETS ARE REQUIRED and should be booked online in advance; slots go at weekends and in spring. THE AFRICAN ANCESTORS MEMORIAL GARDEN BENEATH AND AROUND THE BUILDING IS FREE AND OPEN without a ticket, which is worth knowing — the Tide Tribute is outdoors and costs nothing. The Center for Family History has its own arrangements for genealogy appointments.
