The F. W. Woolworth store on South Elm Street, where on 1 February 1960 four freshmen from North Carolina A&T - Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, Ezell Blair Jr. and David Richmond - sat down at the whites-only lunch counter and refused to leave. The next day there were twenty. Within weeks the tactic had spread across the South. The building is a National Historic Landmark and the counter is still in it, in the room where it happened.
