International Crane Foundation

Bird Park · Baraboo, Wisconsin

A crane conservation organisation founded near Baraboo in 1973 by two Cornell graduate students, now working in more than fifty countries with permanent offices in China, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Texas. Its Wisconsin headquarters is the public face: roughly 300 acres of restored tallgrass prairie and wetland with a $10 million Crane Discovery Center opened in 2021, and what the organisation states is the only place in the world where all fifteen living species of crane can be seen together. It is a working research and captive-breeding institution that happens to admit visitors, rather than a zoo.
