International Museum of Surgical Science

Specialty Museum · Chicago, Illinois

The only museum in North America devoted to the history of surgery, in a 1917 Gold Coast mansion on Lake Shore Drive modelled on a Louis XVI château at Versailles. Four floors of trepanned skulls, amputation kits, an iron lung, a reconstructed turn-of-the-century apothecary and a hall of murals honouring surgeons — it is small, genuinely strange, and unlike anything else in Chicago.

1524 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois, 60610, United States
