University Of Nebraska Lincoln Museum Holding What Is Often Described As The Largest Publicly Held Quilt Collection In The World · Lincoln, Nebraska
The International Quilt Museum is a University of Nebraska-Lincoln museum on the university's East Campus, and it holds what is often described as the largest publicly held quilt collection in the world. It grew from a founding gift in 1997 by the Lincoln collectors Ardis and Robert James, and the collection is now often cited at well over 5,000 to 6,000 quilts and related textiles from dozens of countries, from early American pieced and appliqued bedcovers to Japanese, African, Indian, European and contemporary studio art quilts. Its purpose-built home, designed by the firm of Robert A.M. Stern and opened in the late 2000s, is known for a glass entrance whose panes echo a quilt block. Visitors should understand the scale honestly: only a small fraction of the collection hangs at any one time, in a few galleries of rotating exhibitions that change several times a year, so a visit is usually one to two hours. For quilters, textile artists and historians it is a pilgrimage; for a general traveller it is a quiet, well-made museum worth combining with the rest of Lincoln.

NO OPENING TIME HERE WAS CHECKED. The typical pattern: open Tuesday to Saturday roughly 10 am to 4 pm and on Sunday afternoons, closed on Mondays and on major holidays, and sometimes closed on university holidays. The traps that ruin a day are arriving on a Monday, arriving during an exhibition changeover when galleries are shut, and expecting a large permanent display when only a few rotating shows are up. The Dairy Store nearby keeps shorter hours of its own. Confirm current times before relying on them.
