Iowa 80

Promenade · Walcott, Iowa

The world's largest truck stop, on Interstate 80 at Walcott, open since 1964 and open every hour since. It is not really a filling station: inside are restaurants, a chrome shop the size of a supermarket, a barber, a dentist, a chiropractor, a laundromat, a church, a games room, a cinema and a truck wash, and attached to it is a free museum holding more than a hundred antique trucks. People break long drives here on purpose, which is the only test that matters.

755 West Iowa 80 Road, Walcott, Iowa, 52773, United States

OPEN 24 HOURS A DAY, EVERY DAY, and free to walk into — it is a truck stop, not a ticketed attraction. ⚠ THE IOWA 80 TRUCKING MUSEUM, on the same site, IS ALSO FREE and holds over a hundred antique trucks, but it keeps its own daytime hours even though the truck stop never closes — do not arrive at midnight expecting it. Free parking. The chrome shop, restaurants, barber, dentist, chiropractor, laundromat, church, games room and cinema are all on site. ⚠ THE LOT IS THE HAZARD, NOT THE BUILDING: it is very large and shared with hundreds of manoeuvring and reversing articulated lorries with poor sightlines between trailers — park in the car area, use the marked pedestrian routes and keep children held.
