Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Art Museum · Boston, Massachusetts

A Venetian palazzo built in the Fenway in 1903 by a collector who arranged every object in it herself and then wrote a will requiring that the arrangement never change. It is four storeys around a glass-roofed courtyard planted with flowers year round, hung with Titian, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Botticelli and Sargent in rooms with no labels. In March 1990 two men in police uniform talked their way in and took thirteen works. THE EMPTY FRAMES ARE STILL ON THE WALLS, because the will does not permit them to be moved.
