Anglesey is the largest island in Wales, about 715 square km, joined to the mainland by Telford's Menai Suspension Bridge of 1826 and Stephenson's Britannia Bridge. It is a low, windswept island of farmland, sandy bays, cliffs and small villages, and much of its coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Welsh is widely spoken, and road signs are bilingual. Holyhead is the ferry port for Dublin, so many travellers cross it without stopping. It is worth slowing down for South Stack lighthouse and its RSPB seabird cliffs, the dunes and forest of Newborough with Llanddwyn Island, Beaumaris and its castle, and Plas Newydd house. It suits a long weekend, walkers on the 200 km coastal path, and families after a beach. Honest note: the weather is often windy and grey, many sites are seasonal, and it feels spread out, so a car or good bus planning helps. Allow two days if you want more than one sight.

The island itself is open at all times; opening hours belong to individual sites. The coastal path and public beaches can be used in daylight, and most are free. South Stack RSPB centre and its tearoom commonly open daily through the year with shorter winter hours, while lighthouse tours and the Menai Suspension Bridge exhibition are seasonal, usually spring to autumn, so confirm dates first. Beaumaris Castle is run by Cadw with seasonal hours and winter closure on some days. Plas Newydd opens on a seasonal calendar. Holyhead ferries run all year. Shops, cafes and parking vary by village, and small places often close in winter or on Sundays.
