Arran is a Clyde island of about 430 square kilometres, often called Scotland in miniature because the north has rugged Highland granite and the south has gentler farmland and beaches. It suits walkers, cyclists, whisky drinkers and families who want a Scottish island without a long journey, as the CalMac ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick takes about an hour. Allow two or three days, or a long day trip if you go on foot. The main sights are Goatfell at 874 metres, Brodick Castle run by the National Trust for Scotland, the Lochranza distillery and the Machrie Moor standing stones. Be honest about the problems: the ferry is cancelled in strong wind, vehicle places in summer must be booked ahead, the weather can turn wet and cold, midges bite from June to August, and Goatfell is a serious hill that needs navigation skill in cloud. In good weather it is a lovely island, but it can disappoint in poor weather.
Island in the Firth of Clyde reached by about a one-hour car ferry from Ardrossan to Brodick, with Goatfell above Brodick, Lochranza in the north and a coast road around the island, Brodick, Scotland, United Kingdom
The island, coast road and hills are open all year with no gate. The ferry sets the rhythm: CalMac sails from Ardrossan to Brodick several times a day, with fewer sailings in winter, and a separate Claonaig to Lochranza summer route. Sailings are often cancelled or delayed in strong wind, so check the status on the day. Brodick Castle and its gardens open daily or near daily in the main season, April to October, with the castle itself closed or limited in winter, while the Lochranza distillery runs tours at set times and closes some days. Cafes, bike hire and boat trips are seasonal, mostly Easter to October. Confirm ferry times, castle days and tour slots before you travel.
