Isle of Harris and Luskentyre

Harris Has Some Of The Finest Sandy Beaches In Britain, With Luskentyre'S Pale Sand And Turquoise Water The Best Known, Beside The Home Of Harris Tweed Weaving. Gaelic Is Widely Spoken; Sundays Are Quiet. The Water Is Cold And The Wind Strong, Even In Summer. · Tarbert, Scotland

Harris is the southern, hillier half of the island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, and its west coast has some of the finest sandy beaches in Britain. Luskentyre is the best known: a vast stretch of pale sand and shallow turquoise water that looks Caribbean in sunshine, backed by dunes and machair. It is not a Caribbean swim, however. The sea is cold even in August, the wind is strong, and most beaches have no lifeguards. Harris is also home to Harris Tweed weaving, with small workshops open to visit. Getting here takes effort: a CalMac ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert, or from Ullapool to Stornoway and a drive south. Roads are single-track with passing places, Gaelic is widely spoken, and Sundays are quiet. It suits people who want space, long walks and silence, and are happy with weather that can turn grey and wet within an hour, with a spare day for the ferry. Book ferries and rooms well ahead in summer, and carry cash and fuel.

Southern part of the island of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, reached by ferry from Uig on Skye to Tarbert or from Ullapool to Stornoway, with the beaches of the west coast and the Golden Road on the east, Tarbert, Scotland, United Kingdom

The beaches, dunes and Golden Road are open at all times and have no entry charge. Services on the island are limited, and many shops, cafes and some visitor sites open shorter hours or close on Sundays because of long-standing Sabbath observance, so confirm before you rely on them. Ferry sailings from Uig to Tarbert run most days but can be cancelled in high wind, and Sunday services may be reduced - confirm on the CalMac site. Weaving workshops and tweed shops commonly keep weekday and Saturday hours only. Fuel stations are few and often shut on Sundays, so fill up in advance.
