Isle of Mull and Iona

Mull Is The Second Largest Island Of The Inner Hebrides, With Tobermory'S Coloured Harbour Front, Duart Castle, White Tailed Sea Eagles And Boat Trips To Staffa. Iona, A Small Island Off Mull'S South West Tip, Has The Abbey Founded By St Columba In 563. · Tobermory, Scotland

Mull is the second largest island of the Inner Hebrides, reached from Oban by a vehicle ferry to Craignure, and it suits people who like wildlife, quiet roads and weather-watching more than a tight schedule. Tobermory has a painted harbour front and good fish, Duart Castle guards the sound near Craignure, and the south-west road ends at Fionnphort, where a small foot ferry crosses to Iona and its abbey, founded by St Columba in 563. Give it at least two or three days: the single-track roads, with passing places, make journeys slow. Boat trips from Ulva Ferry and Fionnphort visit Staffa and the Treshnish Isles, where puffins nest from April to July, and sea eagle tours run from Tobermory. Be honest about the odds: ferries and boats cancel in rough weather, midges bite in summer, rain is frequent, and Iona's ferry is foot-passenger only, with cars on Iona restricted to residents and permit holders, so confirm before you plan.

Hebridean island reached by car ferry from Oban to Craignure, with the painted harbour town of Tobermory in the north and a road to Fionnphort for the small ferry to Iona, Tobermory, Scotland, United Kingdom

The island and its roads are open all year, with no gate. The main ferry from Oban to Craignure (CalMac) sails several times a day, with fewer in winter, and sailings are cancelled in strong wind, so check the status on the day. The Fionnphort to Iona ferry is a short foot passenger crossing running through the day, roughly every half hour in summer and less often in winter. Iona Abbey, run by Historic Environment Scotland, is open daily in the main season with shorter winter hours. Duart Castle opens roughly April to October. Boat trips to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles run mainly April to September, depending on weather and tide. Confirm every time before travelling.
