Istalif

Heritage Village · Istalif, Kabul

The pottery village of the Shomali: a Tajik hill town above the plain north of Kabul where families have thrown and glazed turquoise-blue ceramics for centuries — a craft tradition linked by local account to masters from Rishtan in Uzbekistan, fired with the local ishkar plant-ash glaze. Burned and cut down by the Taliban in 1998 for its Northern Alliance loyalties, the village rebuilt itself after 2002 and the wheels still turn: a September 2025 account found the potters working the bazaar lanes, and the drive from Kabul runs about 45 minutes. Orchards, walnut groves and mountain air made it royalty's picnic ground for four hundred years; the pottery makes it a living workshop you can walk through.

A living village — the bazaar keeps roughly morning-to-dusk shop hours with Friday the liveliest day and some workshops resting mid-week. Nothing is published; mornings are safest for seeing work in progress.
