Ivujivik

The Most Northerly Community In Quebec, Where Hudson Bay Meets Hudson Strait, With Strong Tides, Walrus And Seabird Colonies, Carving And Sewing And A Landscape Of Rock Hills And Cold Open Sea. A Very Remote Inuit Village, Reached Only By Air · Ivujivik, Quebec

Ivujivik is an Inuit village of roughly 400 to 450 people on a rocky point at the northwest tip of Quebec, where Hudson Bay narrows into Hudson Strait. It is the northernmost community in the province and is reached only by scheduled flight, normally Air Inuit from Montreal with stops along the Hudson Bay coast (confirm). This is not a sightseeing town: there is no old quarter, no tour desk and no fixed programme. What it offers is a place where the sea does the talking. Tidal streams squeeze through the strait, floes drift past the point in spring, and walrus, seals, beluga and great colonies of seabirds work the water nearby. The land behind the houses is bare rock, small lakes and lichen. Services are a Co-op store, a small hotel or guest house and a few takeaways (confirm), and the village is known for fine sewing and small carvings. Weather and ice rule every plan, so allow spare days and hire a local outfitter for any trip beyond the houses.

Ivujivik keeps no visiting hours because it is a living village. The Co-op, any Northern store, the hotel and the community hall keep their own hours, often roughly 9 to 5 on weekdays with a shorter day on Saturday - confirm by phone. Boat trips run roughly July to September, once the shore ice has gone and the strait is workable, and snowmobile trips along the shore ice run roughly March to May. In midsummer the sun barely drops below the horizon, while midwinter brings only a few hours of grey light and fewer services for visitors. Walking the point and the streets costs nothing at any hour.
