Ivy Green

National Historic Landmark · Tuscumbia, Alabama

The house in Tuscumbia where Helen Keller was born in 1880 and where, at the pump in the yard in 1887, Anne Sullivan spelled W-A-T-E-R into her hand until she understood it. Keller was nineteen months old when illness left her deaf and blind, and that moment at the pump is the one every account of her life turns on. The 1820 house is shown with the family's furnishings, Keller's braille books and her library, and the pump is still standing where it was.

300 West North Commons, Tuscumbia, Alabama, 35674, United States

Generally open most days, roughly 8:30 AM - 4 PM, with reduced Sunday hours and some holiday closures. The Miracle Worker is performed on the grounds on Friday and Saturday evenings through June and July, separately ticketed.
