Ixtapan de la Sal

A Spa Town In The Estado De Mexico Built Around A Big Municipal Thermal Water Park With Slides, Pools And A Hot Mineral River, And Nearby Tonatico With Its Waterfalls And Sulphur Springs. A Family Weekend Resort 2 Hours From The Capital, With A Sunday Market And Spa Hotels · Ixtapan de la Sal, Estado de México

Ixtapan de la Sal is a spa town in the south of the Estado de Mexico, about 100 km south-west of Mexico City and two hours by road, built around warm mineral water that has drawn bathers for generations. The main draw is the municipal Parque Acuatico, a big water park with thermal pools, slides, a lazy river and shaded lawns, and around it sit spa hotels with their own mineral pools and massage rooms. The town centre is small and tidy, with a plaza, a Sunday market and shops selling bottled mineral water, sweets and fruit liqueurs. It suits families with children, couples after a soak and older visitors who want warm water without a long drive. It is worth the trip for a weekend or an overnight stay when the capital feels cold or loud. It is less worth it on public holidays and long weekends, when queues for slides and lockers grow long and the pools fill shoulder to shoulder. Visit midweek if you can, and bring a swimsuit, sandals and a towel, because few places lend them. Nearby Tonatico and Taxco are separate outings and are listed under nearby places.
