Izmir Agora

A Roman Marketplace Partly Rebuilt After An Earthquake Under Marcus Aurelius, With A Long Colonnade, Vaulted Cellars, A Reconstructed Roman Road And A Small Museum. A Quiet Archaeological Stop Inside Izmir'S Old Market District, With Shade And Good Signs · Konak, Izmir

The Agora of Smyrna is the surviving heart of the Roman marketplace of old Izmir, set in the Namazgah district of Konak beside the Kemeralti bazaar. The site was rebuilt after a great earthquake in the later 2nd century and is linked with the emperor Marcus Aurelius (confirm the date). Visitors walk among the remains of a large open square once ringed by two-storey colonnades, with a western portico of tall columns that still stands, a row of vaulted cellars below, a reconstructed section of a Roman road and a small museum of finds. Marble capitals, fallen drums and carved reliefs lie in the grass, and a few olive trees give shade. The agora was a place of trade, law and talk, and the layout is easy to read with a map. It sits in the middle of a busy city yet feels calm, with traffic muffled by the walls. A visit combines naturally with a stroll in the bazaar next door and a tea in a hidden courtyard.

The agora is usually open daily except for an occasional closing day, from about 08:30 to 19:00 in summer and to about 17:00 in winter (confirm), with the last entry shortly before closing. The ticket office sits at the gate, and the small museum may open for fewer hours. Early morning is the quietest time, while school groups can fill the paths on weekday mornings. The site may close in heavy rain or for restoration work, and some areas such as the cellars may be fenced at times. Confirm the hours, the closing day and any works on the day, and plan the visit before the bazaar gets busy.
