The Symbol Of Izmir, A 25 M Ottoman Clock Tower Of 1901 With Orientalist Tilework, In A Busy Square Of Pigeons, Tea Sellers And The Small Konak Mosque, Next To The Waterfront Promenade. A Short Stop At The Start Of Kemeralti And The Kordon · Konak, Izmir

The Izmir Clock Tower is the symbol of the city, a slim Ottoman tower of roughly 25 m that stands in Konak Square beside the harbour, built in 1901 to mark the twenty-fifth year of Sultan Abdulhamid II on the throne. It was designed by a Levantine architect and decorated with Orientalist tilework, carved panels and four fountains around the base, and it still keeps time for the square. Beside it stands the little Konak Mosque, a small tiled building that is among the most photographed in the city, and around both lies a busy open space of pigeons, tea sellers and local people crossing between the bazaar and the quay. The square marks the start of two longer walks: Kemeralti, the old covered market of lanes, khans and food stalls, and the Kordon, the long seafront promenade along the Gulf of Izmir. Ferries leave from the quay nearby, and the metro and tram stop at Konak station within a few minutes on foot. The stop is short, free and central.
