Jackson Heights

Heritage District · Jackson Heights, New York

A planned garden-apartment district of the 1910s and 1920s, built around private interior gardens and made a New York City historic district in 1993 — and now ⚠ ONE OF THE MOST LINGUISTICALLY DIVERSE PLACES ON EARTH, with something in the region of 160 languages spoken in the surrounding zip codes. Seventy-Fourth Street is the South Asian commercial centre of the eastern United States and Roosevelt Avenue is Latin American.

37th Avenue at 74th Street, Jackson Heights, New York, 11372, United States

An open neighbourhood — free, no gate, no hours. Shops and restaurants keep their own hours; 74th Street is busiest at weekends and Roosevelt Avenue runs late. ⚠ MANY SMALL RESTAURANTS AND FOOD CARTS ARE CASH-ONLY. ⚠ THE INTERIOR GARDENS THAT DEFINE THE HISTORIC DISTRICT ARE PRIVATE and cannot be entered — an annual garden tour, usually in spring or early summer, is the only legitimate way in. The 34th Avenue open street is car-free for over a mile. Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street station is accessible and serves five lines.
