Jackson Village

Mountain Village In The Mount Washington Valley Entered Through The Red Honeymoon Covered Bridge, With Jackson Falls On The Wildcat River And One Of The Largest Groomed Cross Country Ski Networks In The Eastern United States, Run By The Jackson XC Foundation. · Jackson, New Hampshire

A small mountain village at the northern end of the Mount Washington Valley, reached by driving through the red Honeymoon Covered Bridge over the Ellis River off Route 16. Beyond the bridge a white church, a few shops and a cluster of grand old inns sit in a bowl of hills, with the Presidential Range rising to the north. Jackson has been a resort since the nineteenth century, when painters and summer boarders came for the scenery and stayed in rambling wooden hotels, several of which still take guests. Just above the village the Wildcat River pours over broad granite ledges at Jackson Falls, a string of cascades and pools that fills with swimmers in summer. In winter the village becomes a cross-country ski town, with one of the largest groomed trail networks in the East run by the Jackson XC foundation, and Black Mountain, among New Hampshire's oldest ski areas, keeps a relaxed, family feel. Around the holidays the inns and the bridge are strung with lights. It makes a quiet base for the whole valley, with Carter Notch Road climbing to mountain views.
