Jacksonport State Park
Arkansas State Park Preserving The 1872 Jackson County Courthouse And The Remains Of Jacksonport, A White River Steamboat Port That Died When The Railroad Went To Newport Instead. The Mary Woods No. 2 Riverboat Is Moored On The Site. · Newport, Arkansas
Jacksonport was a serious river port - steamboats on the White River, a county seat, a courthouse finished in 1872 - and then the railroad was built three miles away at Newport and the town simply stopped. The courthouse survived, was restored, and is now a museum with the county's records and the river trade's story in it. Moored beside it is the Mary Woods No. 2, a White River steamboat that serves as a floating exhibit. The rest of the park is riverside: a swimming beach, a campground and a boat ramp on the White. It is a lesson in what a railroad decision did to a hundred towns across the Delta.
205 Avenue Street, Newport, Arkansas, 72112, United States
The grounds, riverside and campground are open year-round and Arkansas state parks charge no entrance fee. The 1872 courthouse museum keeps daytime hours, generally Tuesday to Saturday, with reduced winter days, and carries a small admission. The Mary Woods No. 2 has been open seasonally and has also been closed for restoration periods - confirm before travelling if the boat is why you are coming.
