Jacksonville
Heritage District · Jacksonville, Oregon
A gold rush town of 1852 in the hills west of Medford, which prospered for twenty years, was bypassed by the railway in 1884 and then simply stopped - which is why it still looks like a Victorian commercial district rather than a reconstruction of one. The entire town was designated a National Historic Landmark district in 1966, one of very few whole towns to be so listed. It now runs on wine, a summer music festival and the fact that nothing much was pulled down.
East C Street, Jacksonville, Oregon, 97530, United States
The town is open all year and free to walk. Shops, restaurants and tasting rooms keep their own hours and several close midweek and in winter - ⚠ KITCHENS CLOSE EARLY in a town of about 3,000. The Beekman House and Beekman Bank are seasonal with a modest admission. The Britt Music and Arts Festival runs through the summer on the hillside above town, is separately ticketed, sells out, and fills the town's parking on performance nights.
